Race 9 July 20th
6.30 On a balmy Thursday evening! Temperature 28 degrees, wind speed force 4/5 on shore. Wow what had we done to deserve this! Not even Tobago or Dahab could offer much more
15 eager contestants gathered at the start line, Ron now assisted by Mr Boulter sweated under the duress of trying to get the start sequence right.
There was much jostling on the line and the anticipation of the forth coming race was too much for some, the one minute gun went and Clive snapped and leapt from the start line like a Gazelle unleashed.
Oblivious to the fact that no one else started he was gone and away. . Tim was having a spot of bother controlling his steed as it bucked and reared desperate to be off. The official start went and the rest of the fleet leapt into action. The usual two got off to a good one ! Mike George and Dave Lewis, the inevitable one two
Then from the back of the line and in clear wind the Lake manager unleashed his beast, flew past most of the fleet and rounded the first mark fourth. Astonished to see that Clive was winning, unaware that he had jumped the start gun.
The wind was really blowing and everyone was planning, the ensuing turns at the marks were proving a challenge as the various abilities attempted their carve Gybes, some successfully, others not. Though I must say that given the conditions everyone did pretty well. A few years back the whole fleet would have fallen at the first proverbial hurdle, the area surrounding the marks would resemble some sort of ghastly marine disaster.
But I digress. Lap two still had Tony going like the clappers Passing both Dave ( not a common sight) and then when he rounded the next mark saw Mike swimming about in the water just ahead. Surely he didn’t fall off!!!! Had he got a bit hot and felt like a swim I ask?. But no he’s fishing around at his fin in attempt to remove a large amount of Brogborough weed! (Now I wonder where that came from. Sabotage strikes me as a possibility). The chase was hotting up. Personally the excitement of the lead was beginning to tell, the mouth became as dry as a dead leaf as the pressure of actual leading became all too much, suddenly the thought struck me that if I kept this up, not only would I be cooking the BBQ, I’d have to make the bloody coffee as well! I needn’t have feared because it all went down hill after that.
Dave regained the lead on the next lap, taking Tony’s wind so that he fell in. Mike was well back as most of the fleet had passed him while he was fishing. Tim was doing well, now having ‘broken in’ his JP he was really getting to grips with it, he was even getting round the gybes under pressure (unheard of before)
Chris Foreman’s battle ship was going well as well as he closed on the leaders. Other members of Her Majesty’s fleet of cruisers were not going quite as well. Mark Fowler reverted to type after his recent successes up front in previous weeks. It was back to the harem herding again for Mark, the highlight of his race being when Jo mounted his board, presumably with amorous intentions. Mark couldn’t believe his luck!
Meanwhile Phil was swimming with his wife and muttering to himself as only Eeyore can. Annette now in full wifely mode said
“Go on Eeyore you go first, I’ll just wait here till your gone”(What a brick)
Eeyore was heard to mutter as he left that he had just spotted a particularly nice underwater Thistle and really didn’t want to leave.(God you can’t please some donkeys can you?)
Mike Milnthorpe always seems to struggle in racing and tonight was no exception as he crashed about at the back, one does sometimes wonder whether there is some devious plan to take over Mark’s harem when he’s not looking.
Mad Janet was going well even getting round the odd corner (that week with Guy Cribb seemingly paying off) Alex was struggling a bit in the conditions due mainly to overwork and lack of holidays.
Rob also didn’t seem to be having too good a time, gybing under pressure not really being his thing.
Martin was doing well, still shouting “Coming through” to anyone that might be in his way. Someone really should tell him this is not a racing term to gain right of way.
Half way through the race and Dave still had the lead, but when he looked back he was aware that Mike G was working his way back through the pack. Nearing the end of the race and fatigue was setting in. Dave satisfied with his gybes was now having difficulty in sailing in a straight line as he tripped over his foot straps and fell in for the second time.
Mike took the lead ( well there’s a surprise) and won yet again
Tim came storming through to take second and Chris also passed Dave who was having a nightmare last lap
Tony limped in 5th while Phil trundled in sometime later in 6th. Janet did really well to be first lady in 7th while Martin Theis came 8th a great result, Annette came 9th while the amourus Joe took 10th, Mike Milnthorpe came 11th and Alex made 12th. Mark Fowler cruised in on his love boat in 13th place while Rob struggled into 14th position. Clive much to his disgust was told he was disqualified for being over the line. He thought it was common practice ( I must admit I have vague recollections of it happening before)
But it was a great race, best slalom of the year
Same again next week please!
